Barbara Ruth Reason was born December 11, 1949 to Blanche (Wilson) and James Gibbs in Jackson, MS, who were affectionately known as “Darling” and “Ma’dear” respectively.
Barbara was the youngest of eight children. She attended and graduated from Sam M. Brinkley High School where she sung in the choir. Barbara knew the Lord from an early age and was baptized in 1955 at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
In 1967, Barbara married Julius H. Smith and from that union two precious sons were born; Julius Smith, Jr. in 1967 and Eddie James “E.J.” Smith in 1969.
In 1969, Barbara moved her family to Chicago, IL where she worked in the banking industry for many years. Following the divorce of her first husband, Barbara eventually met and fell in love with her loving and devoted husband, Charles Reason, whom she said resembled Marvin Gaye. In 1984, they welcomed their beautiful daughter, Chariee Reason. Charles and Barbara were married in August of 1986. Three years later, the blended family moved to Fort Wayne, IN.
Barbara was a woman of faith and enjoyed attending church. She was a faithful member of Grace Temple C.O.G.I.C. for 30 years until she joined Prevailing Faith Fellowship in 2016 where she became a dedicated member of the church family.
With her vivacious and outgoing personality, Barbara easily made friends. She never knew a stranger and her warm and generous spirit drew others to her. She gave sound advice and listened without judgement.
Barbara was an avid walker and enjoyed participating in numerous fitness activities at her local gym. Her many interests included reading, cooking, spending time with friends, watching her favorite soaps, and shopping for the best discounts. However, her greatest joy was loving and taking care of her family.
On Sunday, September 15, 2019, Barbara went home to be with the Lord surrounded by the love of her family. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 33 years, Charles Reason; three children, Julius Smith, Jr. of Irving, Texas, Eddie James (Mona) Smith and Chariee Reason both of Fort Wayne, IN; grandson, Jamar Smith of Missouri; three siblings, Solomon “Gene” (Joyce) Gibbs of Chicago, IL, Archie Davis and Norma Jean Benion-Brown both of Jackson, MS; and host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Blanche Gibbs; siblings, James Gibbs, Minnie Gibbs, Shirley Gibbs-Lee and Charles Gibbs.
