Joe Nelson Hawkins was born on March 15, 1948, to Willie Mae Hawkins in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised by his stepfather Walter Hendrix, Sr. He departed this life on Sunday, November 17, 2019.
Joe attended Central High School. His favorite sports included: basketball, track and bowling. He was a member of The Spiritual Israel Church and Its Army. He was called to the Deacon Board. He loved working in the kitchen and at various Israel Temples.
Joe was a member of the Indiana Labor Union and worked for the Fort Wayne Newspaper for twenty-six years. He retired in the year of 2011.
Joe was known as the “Cheesecake Man”. He was famous for baking his Cheesecakes with a variety of toppings. He loved to dance, take pictures and record Gospel Songs: via VHS/CD.
He was an honorary Glorious Tone member. He loved all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He left behind to cherish his memories two sons, Johnny M. Bojinoff and Joseph McDonald; five daughters; Dawn (LeVell) Williams, Angela Dennis, Kristin (Robert) Hacha, Karen Mitchell and Jennifer (Donald) Clark all of Fort Wayne, IN; twelve grandchildren, Chauntel, Dyllen, Teela, Simone, Nevaeh, Javius, Dominic, Nakia, Jessica, Samantha, Michael, and Anthony; two great-grandchildren, Aria and Winnie; brother, Walter Hendrix Jr.; sister, Valerie (James Sr.) Kendrick; niece, Clemetrius Hendrix; nephews, DeQuan Newborn and Dominich Newborn; two great-great Niece, Alaiyia and Harlen; three uncles, Nelson Hawkins, Roosevelt (Odessa) Hawkins and Robert Hawkins Jr.; three aunts, Georgia Butler, Savannah Powell and Reather Winfield; close friend, Cheryl Hogel and a host of extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Willie Mae (Hawkins) Hendrix; stepfather, Walter Hendrix, Sr.; sister, Velvet Ann Newborn; grandparents; Robert and Birdie (Gibson) Hawkins.
