Bertha (Hutchins) Crews was born June 25, 1940 to Ovetta (Johnson) and Arthur Hutchins, Sr. in Centreville, Alabama. She departed this earthly life on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at Parkview Hospice.
At the age of twelve, she accepted Christ and joined the Pine Grove Baptist Church in Brent, Alabama. After leaving Alabama Bertha resided in the state of New York for a short period of time. She relocated to Fort Wayne, Indiana and married James Crews. To this union, they were blessed with two children.
In 1961, Bertha joined Tabernacle Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Calvin Perry. She became active in several auxiliaries, sung in the senior choir and served faithfully. She remained at Tabernacle for 44 years. During her caregiving for her son, Robert she joined Greater Mt. Ararat Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Ernest K. Starks in 2005; she attended and remained until her health began to fail.
Bertha attended and received her nursing license from Parkview School of Nursing. She was employed by Parkview Hospital Pediatric Unit and retired with over 28 years of service.
Bertha leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Janette (Jones) Crews; son, Robert Crews; brother, Henry G. Robinson; sister, Lula M. Robinson all of Fort Wayne; son-in-law to be, Donotha Hawkins of Cleveland, OH; seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Crews; parents, Arthur and Ovetta Hutchins, Sr.; grandparents, Richard and Mary Jane Johnson; brothers, Richard Hutchins, Arthur Hutchins, Jr., SSG Sterling W. Hutchins and Theodore Hutchins; sisters, Ophelia Ellis and Ruby Ellis; son-in-law, Ronny Jones, Sr.
Burial in Lindenwood Cemetery
