Catherine Serf was born March 2, 1924, in Richmond Indiana to the late William and Erma Embry. She peacefully departed this life in her sleep on Friday morning, August 27, 2021.
On May 12, 1951, Catherine married the love of her life, Gilbert Serf, who departed this life on February 17, 1995. The celebrated 43 wonderful years
together. Catherine graduated from Richmond High School and later went on to work for Perfect Circle, the McCormick family and QL’s Barbecue. However, her most prized role was being a wise, dedicated and Godly wife, mother and grandmother.
She was an active member of Union Missionary Baptist Church for 22 years. Prior to joining Union, she was a longtime member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess and faithful Sunday School teacher. She was also active in the Senior Choir, Willing Workers and Vacation Bible School. She loved to read her Bible and was a very giving, loving and an unselfish person who brought so much joy and laughter to so many. Her kind and caring heart will always be with us. She will be deeply missed.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Joseph (Wilma) Serf, Rhoda (Michael) Serf, Jonathan (Faith) Serf, Samuel Serf, Mark (Franca) Serf, Mary Serf, Daniel (Andrea) Serf, Gilbert, Jr. (Naomi) Serf and Flora Clark; brother, James Embry; 35 grandchildren; 42 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends; Mrs. Catherine Ross and Mrs. Hattie Fowlkes.
Catherine was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert Self; parents, William and Erma Embry; sisters, Maizie Embry, Leota Mae Embry, George Stone, Ruby Hampton, Tina Turley, Willa Mae Stevens; brothers, William Embry and Robert Embry; grandson, Darryl Goodwin; great-grandson Tychicus Sims; daughter-in-law, Izola Serf and special friends, Mrs. Clezeal Olden, Mrs. Mattie Scaife, and Mrs. Cynthia Bass.
