Geraldine “Gerry” Burns, 93, of Muncie passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Golden Living Center. She was born November 13, 1927 in Muncie, Indiana to Elsie and Major Dollison.
She graduated from Muncie Central High School in 1945. She also graduated from Indiana Business College. Gerry loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She never met a stranger, her front door was always open, sometimes holding a count on her front porch. She was a great cook known for her ham loaves, five-hour stew and macaroni and cheese. She enjoyed a good card game and listening to jazz.
Gerry was a lifelong member at Shaffer Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she served as trustee, building committee, church treasurer, usher board and kitchen committee (Golden Girls).
In 1964, she started her career in politics. In 1966, she was appointed vice committee person in precinct 19, Delaware County for many years she held that position. She was also a board member of Ross Community Center, Vice Chairperson for Annual African American History Program at Shaffer Chapel. She was awarded the Muncie Central High School Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014. She also received an award from United Daycare; she was awarded the David Sursa Leadership Award in 2015. She received the first Lifetime Board Membership in the history of the organization.
She was employed by the Controller Office and BMV for several years. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the purchasing department at City Hall and retired after many years of dedicated service. She was on the board of trustees for Center Township. She also served on the Center Township Advisory Board for many years. She was one of the founders and board member First Black to Muncie Comm. She was the first black to be appointed to Delaware Central Comm. She served many years as a member of ABWA and Our Pal Clubs.
Gerry’s biggest joy was being able to help so many people obtain jobs within city government. She was a faithful worker with the Democrat Women of Delaware County.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Sharon A. (Barry) Miller; sister, Barbara K. Bryant; nephew, Eric Bryant; nieces, Karen and Juanita Bryant; grandchildren, Christopher S. Carter, Barry D. Miller, Darren Burns, Danny (Joyce) Burns, Eric Burns II, Bettina (Doug) Humphrey, Beonka Wesby, Erica L. Wilson and Khalid (Tabitha) Richard; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; special cousins, Rita Johnson, Myrna Robertson and Richard M. Conley; lifelong friends, Beverly Sims and Hurley Goodall; special friends, JoAnn White, Margaret A. McCullum, Linda Brandson and Maggie Jones.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Idell Burns; son, Eric S. “Blue” Burns; parents, Elsie and Bill Turner, Major Dollison; sister, Ivon Griffin; first born grandchild, Carmen D. Fuller; grandsons, William B. Miller and LuJuan Wilson; special cousins, Vivin Conley, Juanita A. Hayes and Millie Abram; special friends, Govnor Maddox, Robert Fletcher and Glendor Glenn.
