We are deeply sorry for your loss - the staff at Community Funeral Care, Carmichael Chapel
Gwendolyn Patricia Northington was born Tuesday, July 18, 1944, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to the late Robert Bose McHaney, Sr., and Ruth Ellen McHaney. Gwen graduated from Central High School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and later attended Ivy Tech where she received an associate degree in accounting. Prior to obtaining her degree, she worked both at ITT and as a talented seamstress making suits and other clothing for anyone who asked. She then worked for North American Van lines from 1978-1996 where she retired. After moving to Louisville, Kentucky, she worked at KFC YUM and Williams Food.
Gwen loved spending time with her family, church family and friends. She touched the lives of many in so many ways, especially by sharing the word of the Lord. She was a sharp dresser who loved wearing her suits with matching hat, shoes and purse. She was such a beautiful lady who wore her clothes well. Besides being fashionable, she loved being creative through her sewing, embroidering, quilting, and crocheting. She displayed and shared her creativity with which she had been blessed by gifting many of her creative designs.
The greatest thing in Gwen’s life was when she received the Holy Ghost at the age of 11 under the leadership of District Elder Henry W. Jones at Christ Temple Apostolic Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. She served the Lord faithfully until she departed this life. While serving at Christ Temple Apostolic Church under the leadership of Elder Henry W. Jones and Bishop E. C. Haywood, Gwen was active in various ministries: Usher Board, altar work, audio, choir, youth ministry leader, secretary of Sunday school, and a mentor to many.
In 1996, Gwen married Nathaniel Northington and moved to Jeffersonville/Louisville area, where she attended Newburg Apostolic Church (Louisville) under the leadership of Pastor Waverly J. Holland.
She continued to serve the Lord as the president of the usher board, usher of the PAW FAC Kentucky-Tennessee Council, altar worker, assistant secretary of Sunday school, and a mentor to the youth. Gwen also wrote resolutions and weekly Sunday morning programs for the service. She stayed busy working for the Lord no matter where she was.
She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Bose McHaney; mother, Ruth Ellen McHaney; deceased spouse, Arthur M. Woods; son, Delane A. Woods; brother, Robert Bose McHaney, Jr.; sister, Jacqueline Bradley; and nephew, she raised as her son, DeMark McHaney. Gwendolyn P. Northington was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.
She leaves to cherish their many memories of her: loving husband of 26 years Nathaniel Northington, Sr.; four children, Anthony Woods, Kecia Woods, Trudy (Alex) Adams, and Teresa Bray; four grandchildren, Brianna Woods-Ingram, Angelique Woods, Alexis Adams and Simon Bray III; siblings, Dorothy Alexander, Icilee (Nate) Johnson, Carlton McHaney, Alfredo McHaney, and Stacy McHaney; and a host of nieces and nephews. Through her marriage to Nathaniel Northington, Sr., she gained a son Nathaniel (Katie) Northington Jr., and daughter, Renee (Sean); Kelsaw, eight grandchildren, Shardesha (Qualyn) Boone, Shira Bennett, Christian Bennett, Thomas (Cassandra), Kelsaw, Keenan Kelsaw, Nathaniel III (Heather) Northington, (Jayla Northington, and Juwan Northington; and eight great grandchildren.
