Mary Sue Johnson, 76, passed away Friday August 21, 2020 at Signature Healthcare Center, in Fort Wayne.
Born Aug. 4, 1944, in Saltville, VA, she was the daughter of Grover and Flora Helton. Mary Sue was formerly married to Roosevelt "Jake” Johnson, who predeceased her January 24, 1998.
Mary Sue was raised in Saltville, VA, and is a 1963 graduate of Patrick Henry High School. After graduation, she moved to Elkhart, IN to be near family.
She worked for IMC in Elkhart, for a number of years. After meeting her husband Jake, she then moved to Fort Wayne, where since 1979, she had focused on raising and teaching her children. In 1985 she would begin a career with Magnavox (now Raytheon).
She was dedicated to her work at Raytheon, and served as a line worker and a trainer of new team members for 14 years. She was also involved in the PTA, and mentored young kids and teens at any church she attended or, any neighborhood she lived in.
Mary Sue enjoyed watching her boys compete in sports and often attended high school and college competitions after their graduation. She loved watching NASCAR races, professional wrestling and cheesy Lifetime movies. She listened patiently and offered life counsel to anyone free of charge.
A beloved, wife, cherished mother and world-class best friend, her greatest passion was investing in her sons and mentoring young people. It wasn’t hard for everyone to think of her as their mom too. Affectionately referred to as “Momma J.”, she leaves a legacy of faith in Jesus, compassion for all people, an infectious laugh and eternal affection for her “babies”.
Mary Sue’s family would like to say a special thank you to all of the nurses, practitioners, therapists and staff at Signature. They are grateful for the love and care she received daily for almost a decade.
Mary Sue is survived by her twin sons, Nicholas Johnson (Melissa) of Richmond, IN and Nathan Johnson (Melanie) of Cincinnati, OH; two step-daughters Renee Wattley (Neal) of Ft. Wayne; Kyra Gonzalez (David) of San Tan Valley, AZ; her brother, Harrison Helton of Goshen, IN; her sister, Betty Anderson (W.V.) of Goshen, IN; her Sister-in-law, Artelia Jackson (L.C.) of Ft. Wayne; her grandchildren, Jayden, Jacob, Nathaniel, and Anthony, as well as, many nieces, nephews, and “adopted” children.
She was preceded by her parents, Grover and Flora Helton; and her siblings, Virginia, Gue, Bill, Jack, Glenn, Carl, Jim, Clarence, Don, and Walt.
