Obituary

Emeritus Pastor Charles Everett Coatie, 94, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 10th, 2023, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.  Charles Coatie was born April 14, 1929, in Mounds City, IL to his loving parents, Bishop Dixon Coatie and Hazel Henry Coatie.  Charles attended Love Joy School.  Charles volunteered in the US Army and became a staff sergeant and a communication chief in the Korean War.  In 1953, Charles was united in marriage to Ann Dennis.  Out of that union were born five girls, Deborah, Shenetia, Shelia, Charlotte, and Beth Ann. Charles never met a stranger.  He was loved by many with his infectious smile.  He made known that God healed him from cancer.  He showed his family how to love one another and was sure they knew after every conversation, by ending it with “I love you, and if its anything I can do for you, I got my pants on.” He taught his family how to fear God and believed that nothing was impossible without him.  His favorite saying was “We count numbers, but God makes numbers count.”

In 1956, Charles became an employee of Warner Gear.  He started as a janitor, then became a blue printer and lastly, a security guard.  Charles worked at First Merchants Bank in addition to Borg Warner (formerly known as Warner Gear) where he retired in 1993.

Calvary Church of God in Christ, at the request of the late Mother Dorothy Barton. He pastored two churches, one in Richmond and Muncie, Indiana.  He would spend the 1st and 3rd Sundays in Richmond and the 2nd and 4th Sundays in Muncie.

In 1973, Pastor Coatie was appointed Superintendent.  In 1995, he became a chaplain for the Muncie Police Department and Delaware County Sheriff Department.  In 2001, Superintendent Coatie and Mother Ann Coatie founded Greater Mt. Calvary C.O.G.I.C. and later became Emeritus Pastor in 2017.  Prior to his death, he served as an Administrative Assistant, Fourth Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Indiana North Central, Bishop Donald L. Alford Sr., Jurisdictional Prelate.

After the passing of Mother Ann Coatie, Charles married Clara Johnson in 2011.  Charles leaves to cherish his loving memories to his wife, Clara Coatie; Daughters: Shenetia Venable (Superintendent Earl A.
