Emeritus Pastor Charles Everett Coatie, 94, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, May 10th, 2023, at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Charles Coatie was born April 14, 1929, in Mounds City, IL to his loving parents, Bishop Dixon Coatie and Hazel Henry Coatie. Charles attended Love Joy School. Charles volunteered in the US Army and became a staff sergeant and a communication chief in the Korean War. In 1953, Charles was united in marriage to Ann Dennis. Out of that union were born five girls, Deborah, Shenetia, Shelia, Charlotte, and Beth Ann. Charles never met a stranger. He was loved by many with his infectious smile. He made known that God healed him from cancer. He showed his family how to love one another and was sure they knew after every conversation, by ending it with “I love you, and if its anything I can do for you, I got my pants on.” He taught his family how to fear God and believed that nothing was impossible without him. His favorite saying was “We count numbers, but God makes numbers count.”
In 1956, Charles became an employee of Warner Gear. He started as a janitor, then became a blue printer and lastly, a security guard. Charles worked at First Merchants Bank in addition to Borg Warner (formerly known as Warner Gear) where he retired in 1993.
In 1961, Charles became a minister. In 1962, Minister Coatie was sent to pastor Faith Temple C.O.G.I.C. in Richmond, IN. In 1964, Minister Coatie became an ordained Elder. In 1974, Elder Coatie was sent to Pastor Mt. Calvary Church of God in Christ, at the request of the late Mother Dorothy Barton. He pastored two churches, one in Richmond and Muncie, Indiana. He would spend the 1st and 3rd Sundays in Richmond and the 2nd and 4th Sundays in Muncie.
In 1973, Pastor Coatie was appointed Superintendent. In 1995, he became a chaplain for the Muncie Police Department and Delaware County Sheriff Department. In 2001, Superintendent Coatie and Mother Ann Coatie founded Greater Mt. Calvary C.O.G.I.C. and later became Emeritus Pastor in 2017. Prior to his death, he served as an Administrative Assistant, Fourth Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction Indiana North Central, Bishop Donald L. Alford Sr., Jurisdictional Prelate.
After the passing of Mother Ann Coatie, Charles married Clara Johnson in 2011. Charles leaves to cherish his loving memories to his wife, Clara Coatie; Daughters: Shenetia Venable (Superintendent Earl A. Venable), Shelia Coatie, Charlotte C. Johnson, Muncie, IN, Beth Ann Coatie, Ft. Wayne, IN; Adopted Son: Overseer Curtis Daniels, Elyria, OH; Grandchildren: Andrea Bond (Minister Jermaine Bond), D. Pepper Johnson, Elder Charles Venable (Dionna), Yanita Boykins (Anthony Boykins), Frisco, TX, Charda’ Johnson, Nashville, TN; Great-grandchildren: Aspiring Missionary Breanna McIntosh, Teanna Pounds, MaCayla Venable, Deontrell Johnson, Jayanna Pounds, C’Aysha Venable, Alison Boykins, Autumn Boykins, CaLaya Venable, and Airianna Bond; Brother Eld. Robert Coatie (Birdeen), Olivebranch, MS; Sisters: Barbara Wilmont and Naomi Walker (Leon) Milwaukee, WI, Rev. Muriel Weeden, Muncie, IN, Sister-in-law, Darlene Coatie, Muncie, IN, Gloria Dennis, Midlothian, TX, Brother-in-law, Rev. Charles Dennis, Humboldt, TN and Larry Dennis, Saint Louis, MO.
He leaves behind two stepchildren, and a host of step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, the extended late Rev. L.T. and Mother Dorothy Barton Family, Walter and John Lee and The Original Carver Dr. Families
Superintendent Coatie was proceeded in death by his parents, Bishop Dixon and Hazel Henry Coatie, Stepmother Georgia Coatie, Loving Late wife, Mother Ann Dennis Coatie, Daughter Deborah Coatie, Brothers, Theodore, Elmer and George Coatie, Sister, Bertha Rodgers, Son-in-law Dwight Johnson II, Brother-in-laws, Leslie Wilmont and Willie D. Rodgers Sr.

Public calling and funeral services will be held at Greater Mt. Calvary C.O.G.I.C., 1524 E. Butler St., Muncie, Indiana, 47303. Family and friends may call Friday, May 19, 2023, from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 11:00 AM. Burial will be Monday, May 22, 2023, 10:00 AM, at Marion National Cemetery, 1700 E. 38th St., Marion, IN, 46953.
