Paul Robeson Lyons, Sr. was born on March 8, 1940, in Fort Wayne, IN, to the late Preston Allen Lyons, Jr. and Luebirda Lyons. He departed this life on Friday, November 6, 2020.
Paul was a proud graduate of Central High School and left Fort Wayne immediately after high school to work on the construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in New York State. He eventually returned to Fort Wayne and went on to work at many factories. While employed at the International Harvester, he was instrumental in assisting many blacks with successfully passing the discriminatory entrance exam. He also worked at Tokheim and developed several methods for helping the company save on manufacturing costs. His ingenuity earned him the respect of management, which he used to help family and friends secure employment there. He retired from Slater Steel after many years of dedicated service.
His favorite pastime was fishing. He was happiest when he was near water with a fishing rod in his hands. Oftentimes he would go fishing and catch plenty of fish, then take them home, clean them and give them away. This is just one example of his kind, giving, and generous nature. His love of fishing led to him owning and operating Lyons Fish Market during the 1970s. He traveled to Windsor, Canada, regularly to ensure that he provided his customers with the freshest, highest quality fish available.
Paul was the cornerstone of the Lyons family. He could always be counted on by family members to lend a helping hand (financial or otherwise), a sympathetic ear, or caring advice. He felt it was his duty to help keep his family out of harm’s way and would not hesitate to step in to protect them. He was nothing if not altruistic.
Paul leaves to cherish his memory: the mother of his sons, Maggie Lyons, the second mom to his children, Vandetta Starnes, four children, Paul, Jr. (Joan) Lyons, Maurice (Rhoda) Lyons, Sidney Lyons, and Angela Hockett; three brothers, Robert Lyons, Sr., Carl Lyons, and David Thornton; one sister Margaret Lyons; nine grandchildren, Janelle Lyons, Regine Lyons, Jenna Lyons, Brandon Lyons, Caila Lyons, Tony Gardner Jr., Xavier Hockett, Aundrea Kosia, and Eugene Lyons, Jr.; two great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; he was also preceded in death by his son Eugene Lyons, Sr., two brothers Preston Lyons III and Larry Lyons and one sister Myla Lyons, along with three grandchildren, Jeremey Lyons, Keaton Lyons, and Carissa Lyons. He also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends to cherish his memory.
A graveside service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, November 13, 2020, at Concordia Cemetery Gardens with Rev. Harold Johnson of Kingdom Door Christian Worship Center officiating.
