Phyllis Jean Croom Lovingly called “Jean” by her brother, was born on June 22, 1953, to the late Franklin C. Jr. and Johnnie Mae (Carswell) Croom. Phyllis passed away peacefully at the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio on Thursday, April 7, 2022, at the age of 68 after a short period of illness.
She confessed her life to Christ at an early age at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. As an adult, she was baptized at True Love Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the late Bishop Jesse White. Later, she transferred her membership to Come As You Are Community Church.
Phyllis’ educational journey comprised St. Peter’s Elementary School, Central Catholic High where she graduated in 1971. She studied at Indiana University (Bloomington, IN) graduating with the class of 1975. She was employed at the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission, giving 30 years of service.
She was the proud mother of one son, to which she leaves to cherish her memory, John L. Sullivan of Fort Wayne; brother, Franklin C. (Charlene) Croom III; grandson, Jaxon L. Sullivan; two nieces, Charmaine S. Roman, and Tierra Easley; two nephews, Kameron T. Bostic, and Franklin C. Croom IV all of Fort Wayne, IN, and a host of cousins, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Franklin C. Croom Jr. and Johnnie Mae Croom; her maternal grandparents, Johnny and Rebecca Carswell; paternal grandparents, Franklin C. Sr. and Laura Mae (Arnold) Croom; and uncle/aunt Willie Curtis and Mary Kathleen Croom.
