Spencer Lee Franklin, Jr. was born June 17, 1948 to Anna Mae (Harris) and Spencer Lee Franklin, Sr. in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was the oldest of seven children born to this union.
Spencer attended Central High School prior to joining the United States Marine Corp. on March 25, 1966 and Ivy Tech State College after serving his country. He received an Honorable Discharge on January 31, 1970,after being injured during the Vietnam War. Spencer received several medals of Honor, which includes National Defense, established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953, Republic of Vietnam, established by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965 and a Purple Heart which was given to soldiers injured during active duty.
Spencer was baptized at an early age and a year prior to his enlistment to the United States Marines Corp., he received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in other tongues in 1965, while attending The Church of the Promise, where his father the late Bishop Spencer Lee Franklin, Sr. was the pastor and founder. He would visit The Church in Jesus Christ, Dr. Donald Samuel, pastor and when his health would permit him. He loved to create beautiful paintings and would watch the Joy of Painting on PBS. He attended college to study interior decorating. He also enjoyed fishing, along with cooking, planting, and growing flowers with his wife.
In 2004, Spencer united in holy matrimony with the love of his life, Bertha Henderson. They enjoyed each other company, often spending time watching movies and sharing popcorn. He would often say, “Whatever Bertha wanted, she deserved it and did not mind purchasing it.” Bertha cared for her love, until the Heavenly Angels came and carried Spencer home on Wednesday, October 7, 2020.
He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife, Bertha Franklin; daughters, Vernita Thompson and LaShonda (Richard) Moody; stepchildren, Felicia Henderson, Juanita Henderson, and Tyrone Henderson; brother, Larry E. Franklin; sisters, Bonnie M. Freeman, Frances P. Franklin, Elizabeth K. (George) Mitchell, Tricia E. (Pastor Donald) Franklin-Samuel, and Candice Thompson; mother-in-law, Juanita Henderson; ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bishop Spencer L. and First Lady Anna Mae Franklin, Sr.; brother, Charles B. Franklin; father-in-law, Aaron Henderson.
Burial in Marion National Cemetery.
